Lanfeust, an apprentice blacksmith, is asked to mend the sword of Knight Gold-Azure. When handling the sword's pommel Lanfeust gains the power to use any power known in Troy, more so without the presence of a sage.

Nicolede, the local sage, decides to take Lanfeust to the conservatory of Eckmül, to learn more about this powers. C'ian, Nicolede's daughter and Lanfeusts fiancé accompanies them, as well as her younger sister Cixi, who secretly is in love with Lanfeust. Very soon they meet a wandering Troll, Hebus. Nicolede enchantes him so he can serve as their body-guard.
